My husband and I went to Siem Reap for 5 days in April.
Cambodia is much better than I expected, food, people, hotels... everything was rather nice.
The weather was hot but acceptable. Somehow I think HK summer won't be cooler than Siem Reap. It won't be too hot once the sun set.
Food was great with a lot of choices. The food or drink isn't dirty in the restaurant. We dare not to try to the food in the street.
Our hotel is a very cozy one. It is small but with good service and environment. We have free laundry, breakfast, minibar, cocktail and so on everyday. The room was clean, big and comfortable. The price is similar to Thai one.
The flight time is short so it isn't hard. We took HK express and there was no delay.
We tried different activities over there, such as horse back riding (we can ride by ourselves without anyone hold the string!! It is not possible for beginners in HK, Japan, Taiwan or Singapore!! ). It was safe and easy. What a lovely experience with a low expense!
We felt safe when we walk at night as well. you would see more tourists than local people. The local people are friendly and honest, at least the ones I have met.
It is worth to go to Siem Reap to see the Angkor Wat and other nice temples, farm, villages and so on!
Siem Reap is a very matured tourist place to good. It is really worth to go but need to avoid the raining season. The best timing is Dec to Apr. After april, it is very hot and humid. On top of the grant and small circuit, can do hiking to water angkor, travel to Koh Ker or even go to Presh Vihear located in the border with thailand (another unesco site).
If time is possible, can read some book before the trip so as to get more background before the trip. I read the book 吳哥之美 before the trip.
Angkor wat is partly Hindu and party Buddhist site in fact. Also, there are another 2 famous Buddhist sites Borobudur and Bagan worth to go.
I agree it is better to avoid the wet season. It might have flooding in September. Most activities in Siem Reap would be outdoor so sunny days would be much better.
Prepare sunblock, mosquitoes repellent, hat... I even brought some sport water from HK.
We joined a farm tour to experience a day as a farmer too. It was interesting to visit the village and the other side of Siem reap.
just be careful if some people ask for money. My driver said I should not pay them...
