請問有jm試過用香港車牌在澳洲租車嗎？還是一定要國際車牌呢？

I think you must have an international driving license. Go to transport department to apply for it. You can have it immediately. It cost you about $80.

理論上只要有香港車牌就可以租車，不過我租過Avis同Budget都問我攞國際牌。當然，你可以同啲職員拗，不過免麻煩，花少少錢申請定冇壞。

謝謝。我知道理論上只要本身車牌有英文就可以，和我上年去紐西蘭一樣。不過既然咁，都係攞定安全D。

我租過Hertz同Europcar. 兩間只用香港駕駛執照都租到，但記得攞車時要帶埋passport

I heard it before. However, would it affect the insurance? What is the reason for having the international driving license then? Just curious.

My hubby insisted we must have the international driving license if we drive aboard.

咁唔係個個國家都認可香港駕駛執照，如美國、日本，去呢啲國家揸車咪要拎國際駕駛執照囉，我剛剛先喺澳洲玩完返嚟，上網book車時無問用咩駕駛執照，個價錢同我去到拎車時無分別，拎車時亦只需出示香港駕駛執照及Passport

國際駕駛執照 is only a translation of the driving license that you hold. Don't believe that you need a 國際駕駛執照 just because you are driving out of HK.

I rented from Hertz in Brisbane back in April, I showed my UK driving license (no passport is needed), paid with my HK credit card, and my wife (who didn't even have to show her driving license) was entitled to drive (no extra insurance payment is needed).

Some states will allow you to drive for up to 3 months using your foreign drivers license, while others will require an international licence. You should check with the relevant state authority using the links below.

Just to supplement what I wrote yesterday, extract from VicRoads (similar to Dept of Transport in HK) is shown below.

Rules for temporary and permanent visas holdersTemporary VisaIf you have entered Victoria on a temporary visa:

you are not required to get a Victorian driver licence and/or learner permit
you may drive using your current overseas driver licence for the length of your stay
your driver licence must be written in English or accompanied by an English translation or international driving permit.

A learner permit from overseas cannot be used to drive in Victoria.

I have also checked my HK driver license and it is in both Chinese and English.

If you are still worried, best for you to check with the car rental company and find out if they will need to see your IDP when you pick up the car. HKD80 is very little money considering how much you will spend in Australia, it's the hassle of going to Dept of Transport, filling in the form, queuing, waiting...
