My son reads Oxford Story Tree (OST), he can read all levels by himself. He likes the magic key stories very much, so what is the next stage I should offer him?

I don't know if it is good or bad, he is 4 in April but sometimes he reads like crazy (like me!) he starts to read every night at 8:30 pm and reads for an hour or more. I have to force him to go to sleep. We fight a lot because of this. Last night, he reads OST until 9:45 pm, I forced him to sleep, he took out the Ready Readers and said, "Let's finish this and I will sleep." His 'finish' is to read all 50 books.

I ordered the Hooked on Phonics from amzon.com, we have completed kindergarten set (actually it is too easy for him). I have ordered the complete set, including Grade 1 & 2. It is a very good home learning kit.

He reads the book, not pictures. He can read each word one by one. When I gave him a brand new book, he can read it to me. If any new word he does not learn before, he tries to guess (because he knows phonics) or, he will ask me. He asks lots of question after reading one story.

I have started to read to him when he was 4-month old. I am no longer interested to investigate if he is gifted or not, even the answer is YES, I don't see the big difference because I don't believe in school, only believe in family education.

I have spent quite a lot on buying the right phonics learning material. (so, please don't learn from me) To cut the story short, I ordered Frontline Phonics from US, Hooked on Phonics from amazon.com. Frontline is more for small kids because it comes with a audio CD, one song to teach one sound. The music is beautiful.

Both Frontline and HOP comes with audio CD, parent guidebook, exercise book and leveled readers. I spent 15-20 minutes to each him phonics. He is able to read Grade 1 (US) books now.

We are living in Shanghai, I teach him at home.

How old is your kid? I recommend Frontline Phonics if your kid is below 4 or know nothing about phonics. The parent guide is simple and easy to use, the follow-up exercise helps him to remember the sound. No need to rush, I bought everything when my son was 2, but he did not understand what I was trying to teach. I started to teach him last July, he quickly understood the concept in a few lessons, able to read the Book 1 & 2, in a week. The parent guide will tell you how to teach, I read & prepare a bit before starting the lesson.

Your son is now just 3 but can read all 7 packs of OST independently?? Wow!! He is really super!!

I bet he must be a super-talented kid!!

Does he like playing games? Think you may use games to distract his attention on books if you find he indulged too much in reading. You know kids need to strike a balance between read and play gar.

Why don't you give the OST exercise for him to do?

btw, I have a friend whose kid loves reading books vv much and finished stage 9 by the age of 4. However, she later found her kid has deficiency in 視覺空間 and need to consult specialists for treatment.

Re; HOP, I can still remember you asked about it a few months ago. Just a v short period of time and your son can do so well!! You're v successful in home teaching ah!!

Actually I found non-working mum is able to teach phonics to kids by herself! Good to save more $$ for buying books and edu materials.

Checked for you from ebay and found v few stage 8&9 available. Some are just individual books and some are old version w/o teaching guide. Better buy from Swindon at 20% off la.

What is 視覺空間 exactly? It sounds scary. I am afraid he has short-sight because he reads in our sleeping room, the light is not good for reading. He is a normal boy, he plays everything like other boys. He likes online games.

I am not a stay home mom, I work full-time. I only spend 30 minutes with him every night.

I search from EBAY, there's another set called, "Magic Key", do you know about it? If there's any set from Oxford only talks about "Adventure"?

I am going to buy the National Geographic set, any idea?

I don't want to say which one is good and which one is bad, because it is highly depending on the reading/English level of the kid and each kid has its learning style. Same for the mom, because I understand my son, he loves learning anything with music, so I did spend time to make my lessons entertaining.

I prefer the US english, so you will see the phonics system I bought are all from the US, but I know most moms in HK prefer UK english, e.g. Letterland and Jolly Phonics. I have Jolly Phonics handbook and 6 fingers boardbooks - it does not help. If you want to teach at home, have to have a complete program.

Why don't you do more online search and find the right material for your son. You search "phonics" will get tons of information.

FYI, hooked on phonics is quite boring, I try to make it very entertaining when teaching my son. I don't believe in phonics VCD/DVD can make the kid understand the concept.

Actaully I've no idea on what is 視覺空間 problem. Just know that my friend's kid cannot understand and catch 3-dimensional concept, that means his world are all 2-dimensional. That's why he likes to focus on reading.

There are 2 types of Magic key books . Once I bid a set of Magic key (6 book set published by M&S) from ebay and later found all 6 books are extracted from ORT Stage 6 & 7!!

However there's othere set of Magic Key (a total of 19 books published by OUP previously) teaching gramma, punctuation and sentence writing etc.

btw, I've no idea on NG.

Yes, I've also got mine from Idea too. Such magic key books (OUP version) are matched with the VCD under same titles.

Its content is not easy to understand by kindergarteners and they are more suitable for primary kids.

Actually the magic key books are not divided in levels. Think you must have misunderstood the Magic Key I mentioned is the Chin version Magic English (40 books + 40 VCD).

Actually no special technique used in reading. If your son is not familiar with eng books, you may point to the word during reading. And do some chin translation of what the story is about.

You can also make use of the CD so that he can listen to the CD and read on his own.
