This lesson has two parts. I found out that I would be preaching two weeks in a row and I thought “perfect”. I can preach this lesson. Otherwise, it is too long.

Have you felt like God has turned His back on you?
Or that He is strangely silent when you need Him?

Have you ever asked the question of God, “why me?”

The purpose of this lesson is:
1) to examine the question “why me?” when we have things happen that we don’t understand and see if there is a reason
2) to understand the goodness of God in what seems to be bad times

資詢大家: 我在此用的 English words size 是3號字,大過頭,定細過頭?定岩岩好呢?

In this lesson, part one, we will examine one cause for our suffering – our own sin.
In part two, next week, we will examine the cause for our suffering which is unrelated to anything we do.
But this week it’s about “you” and “me”
next week its about the bigger picture, “you, me, everyone”.

Right now, open your heart to receive God’s word.
I’ll do my best to present what I understand from it to you.
I hope you will take the scriptures we go over here this morning and think about them some more later in deep meditation.

“Why me, God?”
I’ve had that question before many times.
Always when something particularly bad happened and I didn’t see how I could cope with it.

Let’s break this question down into its parts.
We need to look at some of the basic elements of our life and how we sin.
If we can do that, we can see sin differently and avoid it more.

First, of all,
sin – how does it happen? What is its source?

James 1 –
12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Temptation occurs when we are drawn away by our own desires.
But that is NOT sin.
Temptation occurs when we are drawn away by our own desires AND enticed.
But that is still NOT sin either.

How do I know this?
Because Jesus was tempted in every way as we were YET WITHOUT sin.

Hebrews 4:15 –
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

However, the book of James says when desire conceives it gives birth to sin.
So, somewhere after the temptation sin might take place.
But we can put a stop to it.
Desire is an important part of the process.
Everybody knows that conception only occurs when two get together.

Okay, who are the two in the case of desire which leads to sin?
There is you and who else?

Answer: there is you and there is the devil

The devil wants us to sin.
He will bring our attention to desires that lead to sin.
So, we have to watch our desires, judge to see if they are right desires and handled in the right way.
Food is a healthy desire, but we can mishandle it and over indulge it and that leads to problems.

Let’s begin with Jesus’ temptation. He was attacked by the devil.

If you follow the details in John chapters 1-2, Matthew 3-4 and Luke 3-4 it seems that Jesus was tempted on the mountaintop by the devil right after he was baptized by John and right after his first work.

His first work was the wedding where Jesus changed the water into wine.
This came right after his baptism.

Then Jesus was tempted by Satan on the mountain.

So, picture this: Jesus is on the mountaintop.
He hasn’t eaten for forty days.
He is hungry, the text says that.

That means he has a desire for food.
The desire is okay for Jesus did not sin.

Satan sees his chance.
There is physical desire present.
So, Satan puts the thought into Jesus’ mind that ‘you know, IF you are the Son of God, you could change these rocks into food.’

Of course, Jesus knew he could do this.
He had just changed water into wine.
How hard can it be to change rocks into food?

Is there anything wrong with him eating? No.
He is hungry.
But Jesus also knew His mission.
His mission was to be tempted in every way we are, but not sin.
Otherwise, he would not make a very good high priest.
You see, all it would take is for Jesus to eat by using a miracle.
Then he would be living differently than we do.
But he didn’t do that.
He was tempted in every way that we are, yet without sin.

His answer was a scripture from Deuteronomy 8:3:
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Jesus was able to stop his desire at the point of enticement.
He walked away from the desire of the flesh by reminding himself of scripture and of his mission.
We could do the same.
Of course, we don’t always and we sin.
Jesus never sinned.
He never stopped his focus.

That does not mean he never had that desire any more.
He became fully human so that he could be an effective high priest.
That means he had human desires.

Okay, that is how sin happens and how it can be stopped.

Okay, that is how sin happens and how it can be stopped.

As I said earlier, we need to meditate on some scriptural ideas in order to answer the question “why me?”
What else do we need to meditate upon?

We need to know another cause of sin.
Where do temptations come from?

Now we are going to learn some things about God’s character in contrast to Satan.

First of all,

God cannot lie – Titus 1:2

and God cannot do evil.

Psalm 5:4For You are not a God whotakes pleasure in wickedness, Nor shall evil dwell with You.
Ezekiel 33:11Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says theLord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that thewicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’
God cannot be tempted by evil, nordoes He Himself tempt anyone. – James 1:13

Satan, the Devil is also known as the Tempter in several places in the New Testament.
The reason is simple.
He is the source of all temptations.
He tempted Jesus, he also tempts everyone else.

Now, we read that Jesus said Satan was a liar from the beginning.
He was the “father” of lies. – John 8:44
John said Satan sinned from the beginning. – I John 3:8
What does this mean?

This does not mean that Satan was created to be evil, to deceive.
God did not put that purpose into him.

Satan was the one who tempted Eve which led to her sin.
God did not cause Adam and Eve to sin.
Nor did He create them in order that they would sin.

Adam and Eve – what went wrong?

Actually it wasn’t that anything went wrong.
It was that they never had what they needed to be right.
They lacked trust.

They sinned and broke God’s law because they did not trust God.

God had given them a law – basically, five commands.
1) be fruitful and multiply – I don’t think they had difficulty with that one
2) fill the earth and subdue it
3) have dominion over all living creatures
4) eat from the fruit of the garden trees
5) don’t eat from the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden – the tree of knowledge of good and evil

Very simple rules to live by.
If you trust God then you should have no problem believing what He said.
And there was no reason not to trust God.
God had made man
God had made woman for man as a helper
God had made the world and placed it all under man’s dominion
God had made a special place – the Garden – and had placed man in it.
God used to walk among the trees in the Garden, this was his home away from home so to speak. In other words, man and woman were in God’s presence.

But Eve believed Satan, not God.
She mistrusted God who was her father, who had given her the Garden and trusted Satan, who was no one.
He had done nothing for her.
Why did she still believe him?

Because she wanted what Satan lied to her about.
She wanted the food, to taste it, she wanted to hold it,
because it was beautiful and she wanted the wisdom Satan said she could have.
She wanted to be like God.
She had this desire and was enticed.
Her desire conceived and gave birth to her sin and other sins too.
But she never asked God about this.
She never sought to become like God according to God’s way.
That was because she mistrusted God.

Trust Satan, don’t trust God. What a twisted logic?! (ndw add this: )

So, there are two problems with Eve that we can learn from:
1) she didn’t trust God
2) she desired things that were not appropriate.
3) she didn’t seek God’s will to find out what was appropriate to desire.

Today, we are blessed to have God’s will handed down to us in the bible.
We can learn about the things we should desire.
